Healthly choices and education is very important. Ms. Gallagher's report was not based on good data. Our organization represents Meijer and another 4000 members in Michigan and Ohio and we have devolped a map plotting the 86 full line grocery stores in the City of Detroit. Food is just like infrastructure. No different than police, fire and city services. You will see stores where you see housing. There are a number of reasons chain stores have not survived in the City of Detroit and some of our independent retailers shared them with Meijer so if they do come into the City they survive. Please do not just re-print reports, go out and see the supermarkets in the City. They are some of the best in the State, like Mikes Fresh and Glory and Imperial, Honey Bee, E & L and there are many others! When it comes to fresh perishibles, independents are just as afforable if not cheaper than chains, but when you talk about grocery items with a long shelf life, chains will be cheaper because they can buy in bigger quanitnites. It is just economics, simple as that. AFPD has been around since 1910 and continues to work on bringing more stores to Cities like Detroit, Flingt, Ponitiac and Saginaw, but focus needs to be placed on crime, infrastructure, etc for any business to remain viable.

Hey There Detroitfoodandfitness,
Very interesting, Today more than ever before, people need to find a way to hold onto as much cash as they possibly can. Possibly the easiest way to save money is on your grocery bill, since there are several ways to make that bill shrink and put more money back in your budget.

"Both hospitals are also working with Wayne State University on a “buy Detroit” strategy. Combined, they spend $1.6 billion a year, and small shifts in purchasing could mean millions of dollars for local businesses to expand and create jobs."

Wonderful! These are exactly the kind of collaborations and innovative ideas that will move Michigan forward, help us fight the brain drain, and allow us to highlight the beauty in our state as the turmoil is healed.

Thanks for this post.

Great project! I'm working with a nonprofit in Lynn MA that's building community with song. Would be great to see Building Bridges Through Music team up with Detroit Food & Fitness Collaborative.

Nice posting, Michaelle! It's an important, positive message. There IS a lot of good work being done with Food Service, and that needs recognition.

What a great post! Such exciting things going on around Complete Streets in Detroit! I love the line "Getting this rolling through City Hall will be monumental for our city". No pun intended, I'm sure! The champions working on these efforts, including the DFFC Built Environment work group, will "keep on treckin" (pun intended) and I'm sure Detroit will be a model for other cities!
