The FEAST Youth Leadership Crew is back in action! On September 17th we whipped up another awesome dinner for neighbors, gardeners, and guests at St. Christine’s Church in Brightmoor in the city’s northwest side.
FEAST is about building community through food and growing the Real Food Movement taking root throughout the city and around the country. With the support of the Detroit Food & Fitness Collaborative, young people have been planning, recruiting, and building since 2009 to put FEAST on the map.
This time around we decided to prepare a little heat. We prepared a spicy roasted pepper and corn soup. We started by slicing the Detroit-grown red peppers and then letting them roast in the oven. While they were roasting, we were preparing the rest of the soup’s ingredients.
While half of the cooking crew was working on that amazing soup, the other half was starting to work on a potato salad, and this wasn’t just your average potato salad…it was roasted! Bell peppers and pesto (all grown in the neighborhood) accompanied this amazing salad and our guests loved it. With some of the extra corn, we created a spicy jalapeno dish called “Fiesta Corn” accompanied by custom made tortilla chips made by one of our newer Youth Leadership Crew members. On the side, we enjoyed sautéed kale greens with onions. The last dish to top it off was a delicious and refreshing watermelon juice made with mint and basil, also grown in Brightmoor.
FEAST is so much more than just cooking and eating, though. To get the conversation rolling, we created a discussion board and asked the guests weigh in on their favorite fall vegetable. We also conversed about our dishes and ingredients, and what they love about the neighborhood. We had a few familiar faces, and many new ones, all of whom had a great time. Success!
With another successful Feast created and enjoyed, the FEAST crew is far from finished. In October we’re looking forward to delicious dinners in Corktown and Brightmoor, and a special cooking and tasting demonstration related to national Food Day events at the end of the month. As always, if you know any young people between the ages of 14-20 who would like to get involved with the Youth Leadership Crew, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org or at 313.285.2249.
