Detroit as a National Model of Community Change
Detroit was one of nine communities across the United States selected by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to institute community change in the areas of food, health and fitness. These communities have formed collaboratives to enhance the quality of life and overall health of their communities by transforming their food and fitness environments. Detroit Food & Fitness Collaborative
A grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation Food & Community Program in 2009 allowed us to bring together 40 organizations and dozens of individuals that have formed the Detroit Food & Fitness Collaborative. Because of the support of the Kellogg Foundation and its legacy in supporting food and agriculture programming, Detroit is changing food policy and systems – along with our physical surroundings – to make healthy eating, exercise and play more accessible to all Detroit residents. Kellogg Food & Fitness Vision
W.K. Kellogg Foundation Food & Community Program envisions a nation where all children thrive and have equitable access to good food and opportunities for physical activity and play. The program is working to improve the health of our nation’s children by transforming food systems and the places kids live, learn and play.
Food & Fitness was launched in 2006 as an extension of the Kellogg Foundation’s legacy in food systems and community-based public health. It invested in nine communities across the country with a vision that everyone—especially the most vulnerable children—has access to affordable, healthy locally grown food, and opportunities to be physically active and play. All nine Food & Fitness grantees are part of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation Food & Community Program, which continues past efforts to address affordability and access to good food, and opportunities for physical activity.
